How to Get a Good Job Without a College Degree

How to Get a Good Job Without a College DegreeHow to Get a Good Job Without a College DegreeSometimes, you will see a job that seems like an ideal fit for you. However, what do you if it says College degree recommended or College degree required and you dont have that degree? The good news is that there are ways to get a good job without a college degree, even if the job listing says it is a requirement. In fact, some hiring managers simply say this as a way to cut down on the number of applications. If you can demonstrate that you have the skills and experience needed for the job, some employers will overlook your lack of a degree. There are some things you can do throughout the job search process to get a good job that pays well without a college degree. Ask Can I Do the Job? Before applying for the job, look carefully at the job listing. Read the job description, looking in particular at any required skills or experiences. Then ask yourself the question, Can I do the job? If y ou have most of the skills and abilities needed for the job, but are only lacking the required degree, go for it. Also, keep in mind that if the degree is listed as recommended or desired instead of required, the hiring manager will be more likely to look at an applicant without the degree. However, if you lack the degree and you dont have many of the required skills and experiences, you might not want to apply. There is no sense in wasting your time and energy applying for a job that is not right for you. Consider Taking Courses Even if you are unable to get a four-year bachelors degree (or a two-year associates degree), you can always take small steps in your education that would impress a hiring manager. For example, consider taking courses in your industry at a local college. You could then include these courses in the Education section of your resume. You can also complete certificate programs related to the job, and include those on your resume. Many certificate programs h ave flexible schedules, and some are even online. All of these things would show a hiring manager that, while you dont have a college degree, you are working towards developing a strong academic background. Similarly, include any education that you do have. If you have some college experience, you can say Bachelors studies on your resume, or list the related courses (or certificate programs) that you have taken. Whatever you do, dont lie. Dont say you have a bachelors degree if you only completed part of your studies. Employers will double check, and if you lie, they can rescind an offer or even fire you. Connect Your Skills to the Job Listing When you dont have the education requirements, be sure to show how you are a good fit for the job in every other way. The best way to do this is to connect your skills and experiences to the job listing. Include any keywords from the job listing, particularly skill words. For example, if the job listing says applicants need to have Experie nce in data analytics, you might mention your years of work in data analytics in your resume summary or in your summaries of previous jobs. Network as Much as Possible Networking is a key way to get an interview when you are applying for a job and lack the required degree. When you apply, reach out to anyone you know at the company. Let them know you are applying for the job, and see if they are willing to write you a recommendation, or tell the hiring manager about you. In your cover letter, mention that you spoke to this person about the job. You can also do this if you have not found a specific job opening. Reach out to any contacts, and ask if you can talk to them about the industry, or talk about your current job search. This might lead to information about a job opening. Stay Positive In your cover letter, avoid focusing on your lack of a degree. Sentences like, I know I dont have a bachelors degree, but only highlight your lack of a degree. Instead, focus on the skill s that you do have, and explain how your job experiences make you a strong fit for the job. Tips for the Job Interview If you get the job interview, great Here are a few tips to help you impress the hiring manager, even if you dont have the required bachelors degree. Project confidence. Like your cover letter, avoid deckung statements like, I know I dont have a bachelors degree, but Only address your lack of a degree if they ask. If you focus too much on the qualifications you dont have, the employer wont see what qualifications you do have. Focus on your skills and experience. When answering questions, try to mention any keywords from the job listing. Make sure to highlight your skills and experiences that make you a good fit for the job. Show how you will add value. Because you dont have the required degree, you have to go above and beyond to show that you are the right person for the job. One way to do this is to focus on how you will add value to the company. Perhaps you hav e helped reduce costs or increased efficiency at other companies. Highlight these experiences, and explain that you would like to add value to this company too. Prepare an answer to the likely question. While you do not want to emphasize your lack of a bachelors degree, the hiring manager might ask you about it. You might get a question like, I see you dont have a bachelors degree. Do you think this will hinder you on the job? Be sure to have an answer prepared. When you answer, try to once again emphasize your qualifications (rather than focusing on the drawbacks to not having the degree).

Hilarious Job Search and Career Tips from The Onion

Hilarious Job Search and Career Tips from The Onion Hilarious Job Search and Career Tips from The Onion On the blog, you’ll find quite a lot of job search and career tips, all of it quite real. But in this article, we’d like to take a little break from dispensing tried-and-true job search and career development tips to focus on some of the goofiest advice we’ve read, from a little website called The Onion. Most people aren’t grinning ear-to-ear during their job search, so we hope the next few minutes gives you a chance to stretch those smile muscles! Job Interview Tips from The Onion Back in 1997, The Onion wrote a thorough list of job interview tips, including such gems as: “Wink knowingly throughout the interview.” “No matter how important the interviewer makes him/herself out to be, refuse to talk to that person, saying you want the ‘head honcho’ only.” When answering interview questions, allude frequently to ‘secret identity,’ ‘important work done outside the office,’ and ‘boy sidekick.’ Resume and Cover Letter Advice The Onion gives resume and cover letter advice in several different articles. Our favorites include: “The only way to make a résumé better? Make it bigger! Have it printed on oversized oak tag board.” “Send one resume out and wait at least one year to hear back.” “As you begin your job search, make sure there are no typos on the first 11 or 12 pages of your cover letter.” Finding Your Dream Career Profiles of people finding their dream careers have appeared occasionally on The Onion. My personal favorite is called, “Man with No Real-Life Career Goals Knows Exact Job He’d Want in Harry Potter Universe.” It turns out, the fake Nathan Whalen featured in the article has a really good answer as to why hed choose this particular Potter-themed job: “I definitely think I would be a wandmaker, because I like working with my hands and I consider myself a pretty good judge of character,” says Whalen. The Importance of Work-Life Balance If you’re reading the blog, it’s a good bet that you have at least some interest in better work-life balance. And so does The Onion. In its  article, “Career-Driven Man Beginning to Worry Entire Identity No Longer Tied to Job,” the idea of the overly career-focused professional is spoofed. Is this how you realized you work too much? “‘I always saw myself as a high-performance individual who was focused solely on working my way up to VP, but lately I’ve been worried that I may be developing aspects of my personality that have nothing to do with climbing the corporate ladder,’ said Bowers, 42, noting that he has recently observed in himself an unhealthy level of preoccupation with personal interests, activities, and relationships that can in no way give him a leg up professionally. ‘Just the other day, I was telling my boss about my son’s soccer game- at work, mind you- and he responded by calling me ‘a real family man.’ My boss called me that. It was a huge wake-up call.’ At press time, Bowers confirmed his intention to get back to his roots by leaving work no earlier than 9 p.m. tonight and missing his daughter’s piano recital.” Advice for Those of Us Who WorryAbout Everything On the flip-side of work-life balance, The Onion reported on a man attempting to strike the “proper work-anxietyâ€"life-anxiety balance.” If you’ve ever worried that you’re spending too much time worrying about work, and not enough time worrying about personal issues, then welcome to the worrier’s club. Here’s advice from spoof professional Dale Humphrey on how we can all make time in our days to worry about everything: “When you fret over work as much as I do, it’s important to carve out a little time to freak out about your personal life whenever you can.” Readers, which of these career tips from The Onion is your favorite? Any other great Onion articles to share?

Pay is often based on commission for some positions, so the more properties you sell- especially high-priced properties- the more money youll make. But real estate involves more than just agents and brokers. Many other real estate positions are available, and several paths exist into  real estate work. Most consumers are unaware of the distinctions between these roles and they use some titles interchangeably, even though the legal requirements behind them differ.   The Real Estate Agent These terms agent and broker are often used interchangeably when, in fact, the difference is rather significant. Agents can be either buyers agents or listing agents. As the terms imply, the former represents those who want to buy property and the latter assists those who want to sell. Anyone who sells real estate on behalf of the owner or assists a client in purchasing property is a  real estate agent.   There are two levels of licensing in real estate. You must first take a training course, pass a test, and receive a license to practice as an agent under the supervision of a broker. State requirements for licenses vary. A Real Estate Broker Becoming a  real estate broker  requires a second level of licensure after becoming licensed as and working as an agent for a period of time. Further study and a more stringent test are required. Many states impose certain educational requirements that must be met before sitting for the broker exam, although a college degree isnt typically necessary. A high school diploma is, however, and having a college degree can help with getting a job.   Associate brokers are those who are licensed as brokers themselves but nonetheless work under the supervision of another broker. Managing brokers manage their own real estate offices. Theyre sometimes referred to as brokers-in-charge. REALTORs “REALTOR” is a legally protected phrase owned by the  National Association of REALTORS (NAR). It doesnt refer to a separate level of licensure, but rather it designates that the individual is a member of NAR. Members must meet high professional and ethical standards set by the association. After a building is built or renovated, an inspector comes in to ensure that the building is up to code. Some inspectors specialize in residential houses, while others specialize in commercial and other types of buildings. Home Inspectors  provide professional opinions and documentation of a home, determined by a visual evaluation in addition to operational testing of the home’s elements and components to determine its current condition.Because most real estate properties are not bought with cash, bankers have processes for deciding whether to issue loans to buyers. That process begins with an appraisal- a professional estimation of the financial value of the property. Real estate appraisers sometimes also set values for property tax purposes, for setting compensation levels in cases of seizure by eminent domain, and they might assist in negotiations between buyers and sellers and renters and owners. Appraisers must be either certified or licensed, and several levels of licensure exist. A loan professional takes over on the bank side of the equation after the appraiser performs his job, while any of several types of mortgage professionals will help the buyer negotiate the process. Mortgage consultants, or loan officers, advise borrowers on choosing the best mortgage and they assist in helping them fill out loan applications. They make their money through commissions on the loans. Loan underwriters  make sure that buyers are able to repay their mortgages  before granting approval for loans. The underwriter  will either approve, suspend, or turn down a mortgage application.Licensed closing agents  or closing coordinators ensure that the financial transaction is accomplished properly.Real estate lawyers  make sure all legal agreements involved in the sale are properly drawn up, and they handle any disputes about ownership.Real estate consultants  and real estate analysts help potential buyers understand how to invest in real estate in order to get a good financial return. Real estate managers, sometimes referred to as property managers, manage properties belonging to investors. They deal with hands-on operations and are additionally responsible for maintaining the propertys value and income. Theyre typically paid a percentage of the rents they generate and collect.Foreclosure specialists  facilitate the process when a home or property is reclaimed by a bank due to non-payment on a mortgage. They might help the homeowner, the lender, the new buyer, or all three with procedures, but foreclosure specialists usually work with banks and real estate companies.

What is Big Data? Big Data is an overly broad term used to define the types of information collected on technology users by, well, everyone.  From your clicking habits, while browsing Facebook to how long you pause over a given picture on Instagram, companies are collecting information on those who utilize their services. Online retail establishments do this also, capturing keywords searched, items clicked on and shopping cart to checkout ratios, all in order to better improve the customer experience and ultimately sales.  The information is then attached to your user login or a “cookie” placed on your computer that, over time, creates a detailed picture of your entire internet and technology usage habits. This accumulative information, collected by a variety of sources, is analyzed, sold, resold and reused by retail, social media, marketing, and even political groups, all vying for the most effective way to capture the attention of their target audience. What Types of Jobs Are There For Big Data? As you can imagine, the breadth of information and the sheer quantity of bytes collected has given birth to an entire career field dedicated to dealing with Big Data.  Information needs gathering from Engineers, Software Designers, and Data Mining Specialists. Once you have the info, Analysts, Data Analytics Engineers or Data Architects are typically needed to help interpret the random pieces and work them into a valuable research tool.   Finally, with the uptick in collecting Big Data comes the corresponding public outcry for privacy and compliance concerns.  Compliance and Data Privacy positions dealing exclusively with Big Data are one of the hottest and fastest growing fields as the U.S. races to catch up to countries in Europe who are already developing national policies on what can be done with Big Data gathered information and when. What Skills Are Needed? 8 Things to Consider Before Turning Your Hobby into Your Career

8 Things to Consider Before Turning Your Hobby into Your Career 8 Things to Consider Before Turning Your Hobby into Your Career While some lucky folks truly love their jobs, many others landed in their careers due to necessity, convenience or even a high salary figure. Loving what you do and finding success can be hard when you’re not completely enamored with your career. So let me ask you this: What do you love to do? If your answer is your hobby - baking, crafting, writing, playing sports - then it may be time to consider turning your after-hours activity into your 9-to-5 grind. Transitioning your hobby from part-time to full-time and getting paid for it is no easy feat. In fact, it requires a planning, dedication and the right attitude. So, here are eight things to consider before turning your hobby into your career: Some say the best time to do anything is now, but turning your hobby into a business requires near-perfect timing. How soon can you pull off a transition from hobbyist to professional? Map out what kind of time frame you would need to get things up and running and take your personal life into consideration. If you’re getting married, buying a house, attempting to pay off student loans or credit card debt, making a risky career transition may not be the best at this time. Sure, we all love to daydream and run through the “what if’s” when it comes to our beloved pastimes. Taking action to turn your dreams into a reality requires a huge dose of persistence, every single day. Write down everything you would need to do to simply get in the starting blocks of your hobby-turned-job and check your stamina from there. The possibility of easing into your hobby will allow you to grow at your own pace. If you’re not ready to kiss your lackluster 9-to-5 goodbye, consider ramping up your attention to your hobby as you lay the foundation for growth. This could mean taking on freelance writing gigs to grow your resume and your portfolio or setting aside 15 hours each week to spend perfecting your cupcake recipes and building your client base. A great business is absolutely nothing without marketing. And if you’re the shy, introverted type, shouting from the rooftops about your new interior decorating side project probably isn’t at the top of your to-do list. On the other hand, poor marketing won’t get the job done either. Fortunately, with the right tools and attitude, you can learn how to sell yourself and your business. Lay the groundwork for marketing by using a free or low-cost website building platform, as well as establishing your business on relevant social media channels. The majority of individuals maintain a job - good or bad - to pay the bills. While money isn’t a priority for some, the rest of us have to find a way to make ends meet. Will your hobby turn a paycheck on which you can survive? And if not, what can you do to make ends meet in the meantime? Considering the financial aspects of your future career may mean meeting with a financial advisor, accountant, mentor or even a family member to better understand your options, risks and financial growth potential. While you may love playing video games, a professional career in video gaming may be out of the question. But what if you started your own blog and began guest blogging about your experiences? Asking yourself what elements of your beloved hobby can turn into a career is a good way to get a new perspective for job potential. It’s always possible you could teach your hobby, speak about it professionally or even write about it. Your friends, family, significant other, and even your children will all have their own opinions and advice about your endeavors. Feedback, both positive and negative, can be a challenging aspect of making your hobby into your career. This is the most important question of them all. You may love watercoloring the occasional piece to add to your own art collection or give to a friend, but will you still love painting when you’re doing it every day, with deadlines, while marketing and trying to turn a profit? Sometimes bumping up a hobby from part-time to full-time can take the fun, passion and relaxation away from something you once loved. Take time to explore what it’s like doing your hobby for several hours every day or all weekend to check your level of enjoyment.

Personal Thank-You Letter Example

Personal Thank-You Letter Example Personal Thank Throughout your career, from your first entry-level position through retirement, you will encounter many people who will provide you with help and guidance. Take the time to  thank these people with a personal thank-you letter. Sending a thank-you note is almost always a good idea. If youre ever in doubt about whether or not to send a note, err on the side of sending it. Sending a thank-you note will encourage people to help you â€" and other job seekers â€" again, so this is an important courteous gesture. Thank you letters don’t need to be complicated or overly long and can be written in the form of a formal business letter, as an email, or as a  handwritten thank you card.   What to Include in Your Letter Clearly, the  most important information to include in your note  is your appreciation for the assistance your friend or colleague has provided. Be specific about what the person has done and how it has helped you in your job search.  Thank them for their help, and if they’re personal friends, you may want to offer to return the favor if ever possible. Personal Thank You Letter Example See below for an example of a personal thank-you letter you can send to  people who have assisted you with your job search, as well as tips for how and when to send your letter, and what information to include within it.   Your NameYour AddressYour City, State Zip CodeYour Phone NumberYour EmailDateNameTitleOrganizationAddressCity, State Zip CodeDear First Name,  (or Mr./Ms. Last Name if you dont know them well)Thank you for all the assistance you have provided me during my job search.I appreciate the information and advice you have given, as well as the connections you have shared with me. Your expertise and help have been invaluable during this process.Again, thank you so much. I sincerely appreciate your generosity.Best Regards,Signature  (hard copy letter)Your Name Expand The Best Format for a Personal Thank-You Letter There are three basic options for how to send a thank-you letter. Here’s what you should know about each one:   Business letter:  This is a good option for more formal connections perfect for people who have offered you assistance but that you normally don’t see on a social basis. Youll need to include contact information for both you and the letters recipient, a  salutation, and a  complimentary close. Look at the example above or read more information on how to  format a business letter. Don’t forget to personally sign the letter, and of course, in order to mail this letter, youll need to have your contacts mailing address.   An email thank you:  If you are sending a thank you message through email, be sure to include your name and thank you (FirstName LastName - Thank You) in the subject line of the email. Or just include your first name and thank you (FirstName - Thank You) if you know the person well. This is a good option for both formal and informal connections. You can use it to thank a former colleague or a friend who introduced you to a connection. Heres more information on  how to send email thank you letters  and  guidelines for writing professional email messages.   A thank-you card:  One other option is to mail a thank-you card. Use nice stationery or a thank-you card, and your best handwriting. This is a more personal option. Sending a handwritten thank-you note is more common in some industries, such as nonprofit and publishing, than in others. Use your best judgment if a handwritten note will be well received. Remember to proofread carefully. It can be helpful to type and spellcheck your note first and then hand copy it onto your notecard.   Send Your Thank You Letter Right Away Aim to send your thank you note soon after youve received the help â€" the same day if possible, especially if you’re mailing a business letter or thank-you card. Don’t wait too long because a late thank you letter may seem more like an afterthought, or worse, you may forget to send the note at all.

It#8217;s Week One, and You Hate Your New Job. What Do You Do

It#8217;s Week One, and You Hate Your New Job. What Do You Do It#8217;s Week One, and You Hate Your New Job. What Do You Do It sucks, doesnt it?  You started your  new job with off-the-chart expectations, only to find that it was one  huge mistake. Maybe the work is not what you  expected, or you  dont get along  with the boss, or you just hate the company culture. Whatever the cause of your woes may be, you have a problem. Fortunately, its a surmountable problem â€" one that you may be able to solve without even quitting. Here is some advice  to help you turn your terrible new job around: 1. Lower Your Expectations No job is perfect. Research shows that hiring processes are about 60 percent reliable, which suggests that perfect matches between new hires and jobs are rare. Most new hires will need a little time to get adjusted and up to speed, so its perfectly normal to feel a bit uncomfortable in your new role. This shouldnt be a surprise:  Interview processes are built on deception, with candidates and employers putting their highly specialized interview faces on. The result: Neither party gets a realistic view of the other. Thats why one of the best ways to deal with the new job blues is to come back down to earth, accept reality, and stop chasing the illusory dream job that emerged during the interview process. 2. Boost Your Confidence With a Quick Win Research shows that one of the best ways to build confidence in a new job is to score a quick win. Look around: Is there a problem or situation in your team or department that needs rectifying? Could you be the one to rectify it? If you cant find one on your own, considering asking your boss for their input. Chances are, if you pull off a win like this, youll feel youve made a genuine contribution to your team. As a result, youll feel more engaged and more confident at work. A gentle word of warning here: Dont take on more than you can handle. Give yourself a challenge that only requires a few nights of overtime â€" not a few months of 60-hour weeks. 3. Socialize and Network When things are not going well in a new job, you may feel like retreating into your shell. However, the best thing to do is the exact opposite: Research shows  that people who build relationships with coworkers quickly are more satisfied (and productive) at work. If you are not making friends easily  in your new job,  here are a few tips to help you build some better relationships: - Ask your boss for a buddy or mentor. - Introduce yourself to everyone, or get your boss to introduce you. - Get involved in water cooler chats. - Join the team for post-workday drinks. - Participate in  team sports and games with your colleagues. - Carpool  with employees who live near you. - Ask colleagues for tips and hints about  your new job/office/company. - Offer advice when you can. 4. Get to Know Your Boss Poor relationships with bosses are one of the main reasons that employees leave their jobs. If your relationship with your new boss leaves a lot to be desired, there are a few things you can do to improve the situation. Talk to your coworkers, especially those who have good relationships with the boss, and ask them for  their advice. â€" If  none of these interventions make you feel any better about your job and/or the organization, then it may be  that this job is simply not right for you. You may have to accept that you made a mistake in taking the job, and you may want to consider moving on. But, hey, look on the bright side: Youll have gained some new self-knowledge that will help you avoid similar mistakes in the future.

CV vs Resume Whats the Difference Between a Resume and Curriculum Vitae

CV vs Resume Whats the Difference Between a Resume and Curriculum Vitae CV vs Resume Whats the Difference Between a Resume and Curriculum Vitae A resume is a living document that should be customized for every job. A  curriculum vitae (CV) is a comprehensive document you may not change for months or years. There are other differences:  Length, update frequency, format, and focus. What is a Resume? Resumes are short documents, usually only one or two pages total, that concisely list professional experience, accomplishments, and education. A resume typically focuses on work experience. Most common in the U.S. and Canada, resumes should be updated for each and every job an applicant applies for. Since online job applications are submitted through applicant tracking systems, resume keywords , job titles, and accomplishments need to be tailored in order for an applicant to be competitive. Furthermore, while certain positions in your work history may be relevant to one job, they might not be relevant to another. Resumes are constantly in a state of change. There are three ways to format a resume: chronological, functional and hybrid. While a chronological resume format is most common, job seekers have the option to choose the resume format that best represents their unique professional experience. There are a lot of dos and don’ts when it comes to writing a modern resume. For example, while including references is a major don’t for resumes, references are a big “do” for CVs. What is a CV? Where a resume focuses on relevant work experience, a CV offers more comprehensive professional coverage in addition to broader life experience. What does CV stand for? CV stands for “curriculum vitae,” which means “Course of Life” in Latin. That translation actually describes a CV very well considering it is  a complete listing of your professional, academic, and related histories. What goes on a CV? A CV is much longer than a resume. CVs are usually at least two or three pages long but can reach up to 15 pages in some cases (e.g. seasoned academics). It often includes in great detail: Achievements Education Teaching positions Work experience Publications Awards Research Degrees Presentations Grants Honors Scholarly and professional affiliations A CV is always formatted chronologically and unlike a resume, does not change from job-to-job. In fact, CVs remain static and are only updated when the applicant completes a new accomplishment. For example, if the applicant has a new research study published in a reputable journal, they would add the mention to their CV. When to use a Resume or CV Job descriptions will typically specify whether to submit a resume or CV. If not, there are a few factors that can help determine whether you need a resume of curriculum vitae. Region The use of resumes and CVs is primarily regional. Resumes are most commonly used in the U.S. and Canada (though there are exceptions, highlighted below). CVs are typically used internationally, particularly in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and across Europe. Type of Job Even in the U.S. and Canada, there are certain professions that do require a CV in place of a resume. For example, a CV is usually used in academia by PhD candidates, university teaching applicants, and in some post-graduate application scenarios. The main use of a CV in academia is to include publication information. CVs are also common in clinical medical professions. In those cases, research and education are highlighted.
